The US Army wants to use more than just missiles and guns to counter airborne thunderstorms at short ranges. The service is also investing in laser weapons. She recently received four prototypes.
What is known
The 4th Battalion, 60th Air Defense Artillery Regiment (4-60th ADAR) has received four Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense (DE M-SHORAD) prototypes. In simple words, it is an air defense system that destroys airborne threats using a laser.
The power of the laser weapon is 50 kW. The DE M-SHORAD system will become an important component of an integrated, layered air and missile defense for maneuver formations.
The short-range laser weapon is mounted on a production Stryker chassis. Development began in 2019. Raytheon won the competition after Northrop Grumman withdrew. Stryker is additionally equipped with power supplies, a radiator battery and cooling fans.
