The US Securities and Exchange Commission approved Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda (and parent company ZeniMax) yesterday.
Last year, Microsoft announced its intention to acquire ZeniMax, the parent company of studios such as Bethesda, id Software and Tango Gameworks, for $ 7.5 billion. However, such acquisitions must first be globally approved.
This acquisition has now been approved in the United States. However, the deal will not be finalized until it is also approved in Europe. This is expected to happen within days. These approvals exist so that companies cannot obtain total monopoly positions.
The acquisition will give Microsoft ownership of all ZeniMax studios and franchises such as Doom, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Starfield and Wolfenstein. It is not yet known to what extent all these franchises will be exclusive to Xbox systems and PC.
