Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Anti-Asian sentiment is spreading in the middle United States (US). There has been an increase in cases from March 2020 to February 2021 in those with oriental faces, whether it’s China, Japan, South Korea (South Korea) and even other Asian faces.
In a report made by Stop AAPI Hate, violence against Asian ethnicities has reached 3,795 cases. As many as 6% of the cases were verbal abuse but there were physical attacks and attacks in cyberspace as well.
This peaked on March 16, 2020. At least six Asians were shot dead in Atlanta, USA.
The Atlanta Police admitted that they could not confirm the clear motive for the shooting by Robert Aaron Long (21). Long is a male of white descent who is said to have a sex addiction.
As a result, protests and vigilante actions were launched to call for an end to violence against Asian-Americans. This happened across the US over the weekend.
Hundreds of people gathered on Saturday (20/3/2021) near the Georgia Congress Building. They carried a sign that said “Stop Asian Hate”.
Many waved US flags as cars and trucks accelerated to their horns of support. Xiaoxu Zheng, a 36-year-old medical researcher at Georgia State University, said he came to the protest because he was worried about the rise in anti-Asian prejudice in the last year.
“We live here. We pay taxes. We work here. This is our life,” said Zheng, who has been in the US for 10 years and lives in suburban Atlanta with his wife and two children. Wall Street Journal.
“This is a country of immigrants, all immigrants, so there’s nothing we can do better than love each other, other than work together.”
The sentiment of anti-Asian racism has increased in recent times in line with the corona virus pandemic (Covid-19). Moreover, this outbreak was detected in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Consulate General in New York announced that Indonesian citizens should be alert since March 6. This is in line with the increase in racial violence in the country.
