(CNN) – A senior US administration official confirmed to CNN on Friday that the United States will not strike targets inside Iran, but will focus only on targets outside it.
The official added that American officials knew a few days ago that strikes on Iranian-affiliated militia targets in Iraq and Syria would occur tonight.
Striking targets inside Iran could have constituted a massive escalation.
Regarding the timing of the strikes, the official said that it was related to many factors, including the weather.
For its part, the US Central Command (Centcom) said in a statement that air strikes were against militias affiliated with the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
She added: “The aircraft, which included long-range bombers launched from the United States, struck more than 85 targets, using more than 125 precision-guided munitions.”
She continued: “The facilities that were bombed include command, control and intelligence centers, missiles and shells, drone stores, and militia logistical facilities.”
