The first reports were that the US and the UK were attacking Houthi targets in Yemen.

Just over an hour later, they were confirmed by both US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Biden says the attacks come as defensive actions after repeated warnings.

– US forces, together with the UK and with the help of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, have carried out successful strikes against several targets in Yemen that are being used by the Houthi rebels to endanger freedom of navigation in one of the most vital shipping lanes in the world .

– The attacks come as a direct response to the Houthis’ attack against international shipping in the Red Sea, where they have used anti-ship ballistic missiles for the first time in history. These attacks have put US personnel and civilian seafarers at risk, jeopardizing international trade and threatening the freedom of navigation.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says Britain has taken “limited and necessary proportionate actions in self-defence”, writes Sky News.

It is attacked by fighter planes, from ships and from submarines in the area, and an official tells ABC that Tomahawk cruise missiles were used.

There are reports of explosions in the capital Sanaa, according to eyewitnesses to Reuters. There have so far been no reports of fatalities or injuries.

The attack comes after a long series of attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthi movement against civilian ships in the Red Sea.

Warnings

The United States and twelve other countries warned earlier this month that there will be consequences for the Houthis if they continue to attack ships in the Red Sea.

Despite the warnings, the Houthis carried out their most powerful attack yet on Tuesday this week. The United States and Great Britain shot down twenty drones and missiles.

– The Houthis must stop these attacks, said John Kirby, national security adviser on Thursday.

– There will be consequences for them if they don’t do it.

Abdul Qader al-Mortada, spokesman for the Houthi militia, tells Reuters that several cities in Yemen have been attacked. It will concern the capital Sana, the Hodeidah area, Dhamar and Saada.

The latter is the rebel group’s stronghold in North Yemen. That is what NTB writes.

The Houthis support Hamas in their fight against Israel in the war that began with Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel on October 7.

Sky News has spoken to the Houthis’ “media agency”. Spokesperson Nasr Aldeen Amer confirms that the capital Sanaa has been attacked and says the following:

– A brutal aggression against our country for which the attackers will pay, and we will not budge from our position of supporting the Palestinian people, no matter what the cost, he says.

The US believes Iran is involved in the Houthi attacks:

– We believe that Iran has been involved in all phases of the Houthis’ attack, an American official told the Reuters news agency.

The US also holds Iran responsible for the role it has played in attacks against US forces, according to the official. That is what NTB writes.

The Houthis’ “deputy foreign minister” tells the Hezbollah-backed Al Mayadeen news agency that “the US and the UK must be ready to pay a high price and bear all the serious consequences of this blatant aggression”. It writes Al Jazeera.
