US and UK Joint Airstrikes Target Houthi Rebels in Yemen, Iran Condemns Attack

A military spokesman for the Houthis said the Yemeni capital Sanaa and other rebel-held areas were targeted. In total, the Houthis reported 48 airstrikes.

“The latest attacks will not pass without response and punishment,” the spokesperson said.

Saturday’s joint airstrikes in Yemen followed a series of US strikes on Iran-linked targets in Iraq and Syria. Those attacks were in response to a drone strike that killed three American soldiers in Jordan.

This is the third time the United States and the United Kingdom have jointly attacked the Houthis. In a joint statement, the countries said they had hit 36 targets at thirteen locations. The statement said the attacks were “proportionate and necessary.”

They targeted underground weapons caches, missile systems, launch facilities, radar installations and the Houthis’ air defenses. The Netherlands provided support, as in previous operations. Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark and New Zealand also support the attacks.

Iran condemns the new attacks. That country supports the Houthis and calls the attacks “yet another violation of the territorial integrity of Yemen and therefore a clear violation of internationally recognized laws and regulations.”

A spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said this on Sunday. “These unilateral and adventurous operations only increase tensions in the region and pose a threat to international security.”
