US and UK impose new sanctions on Iran for attack on Israel

Washington. The United States and the United Kingdom imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran on Thursday as concerns grow that Tehran’s unprecedented attack on Israel could fuel a broader war in the Middle East.

The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control targeted 16 individuals and two entities in Iran that produce motors that power the drones used in the April 13 attack on Israel. Additionally, the UK is targeting several Iranian military organisations, individuals and entities involved in Iran’s drone and ballistic missile industries.

“We will continue to deploy our sanctions authority to counter Iran with new measures in the coming days and weeks,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

The move comes after US officials warned earlier this week that they were preparing new sanctions in response to Iran’s activity in the region and to prevent future attacks. Lawmakers at the US Capitol are working on a law to financially punish the Islamic republic and its leaders.

Iran’s attack on Israel early Sunday was a response to a bombing attributed to Israel of Iran’s consulate in Syria earlier this month. Israel’s military chief said Monday that his country will respond to the Iranian attack, as leaders around the world warn against retaliation in an attempt to avoid a spiral of violence.
