US and Taliban Hold Talks in Qatar: Economic Stability and Human Rights on the Agenda

Doha: Talks were held between the United States and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan in Qatar. The United States has stated that it is ready for negotiations to ensure the economic stability of Afghanistan. Thomas West and Afghan representative Rina Amiri participated in the discussion representing the United States. Afghanistan was represented by a group led by Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki.

The country’s human problems, the Taliban’s attitude towards women and girls and extreme poverty were discussed. The US asked the Taliban to be ready to protect human rights. Afghanistan should not be a breeding ground for terrorist groups that pose a challenge to the United States and its allies. US representatives also assessed that terrorist attacks against civilians in Afghanistan are decreasing.

At the same time, the Taliban government demanded that the US be ready to release 7 billion funds of the Afghan Central Bank, which had been frozen. It was raised in the discussion that the travel ban on Taliban leaders should be lifted.
