US and Russia renew nuclear weapons treaty for five years

Russia and the United States have extended their nuclear weapons limitation treaty for five years, the US State Department has announced.

Last week it became clear that the newly appointed President Biden was planning to extend the so-called ‘New Start’ treaty. The countries agreed on the package of agreements in 2010. The treaty stipulates that the arsenals of both sides will be frozen on 1550 operational warheads each.
