US and Russia Reach Agreement to Continue Joint ISS Flights Until 2025

The United States and Russia have cooled relations due to the invasion and war in Ukraine, having put at risk the continuity of cooperation in space scientific missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS). In In a statement, Russian space agency Roscosmos confirmed that it has reached an agreement with NASA to continue to cooperate in transporting astronauts to the ISS until at least 2025.

To remember that a Russia has plans to remain on the space station until 2028, considering that in 2030 the ISS is expected to be deactivated and destroyed in 2031. The planned budget is one billion dollars for its deactivation.

According to the The Moscow Timescooperation between the two countries involves sending crew members of different nationalities on the same spacecraft, something that has cooled since the start of the war in Ukraine. But cooperation has now been strengthened until 2025, in a decision to guarantee the maintenance of the ISS.

The agreement also aims to defend the interests of Russia on the ISS, maintaining at least one Roscosmos representative on the Russian segment of the station and one from NASA on the American part.

The ISS has as partners the United States, Russia, Europe, Canada and Japan, which are currently committed to operating the space laboratory until 2024. But the United States maintains plans to remain on the ISS until 2030 and Russia until 2028.
