Curtin University national security expert Alexey Muraviev told ABC News said direct confrontation with a nuclear superpower was not an option.
As Europeans freak out after Russia invaded Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin has ordered his nuclear forces on combat alert. It would be a nightmare for continental Europe if nuclear war broke out.
“The Europeans weren’t really united before so there are still disagreements that Russia continues to exploit,” Muraviev said, Thursday (3/3/2022).
“NATO and the United Nations or the United States are not prepared to face Russia militarily. Let us remember, Russia is not Serbia, Russia is not Iraq, Russia is not Afghanistan.”

The invasion of Ukraine has shaken the complacency felt by many Europeans who watched the war on the continent in a way that many say is limited to history—and the repercussions will be long-lasting.
“America and Europe are not ready to fight and die for Ukraine because they will face a different kind of military power – they will face a nuclear superpower,” Muraviev said.
Direct confrontation with a nuclear superpower on par with NATO or the United States risks escalating a conventional conflict into a nuclear war.
The US as the leader of NATO has openly refused to go to war directly with Russia. However, Washington supplied Ukraine with anti-aircraft weapons.
