US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have signed a declaration on promoting cooperation between the two countries. The great powers will also stand together for democracy and security in the world.
The German broadcaster Deutche Welle reports that the document sets out the future of German-US relations and economic dialogue.
Both countries support the principle of common defense and consider NATO to be the main guarantor of European security.
An energy and environmental partnership document was also signed during the meeting in Washington. It expresses the desire to combat climate change and, at the same time, to ensure security of energy supply and the development of new energy technologies.
At a press conference, Biden emphasized that the United States and Germany would continue to act as a united front to protect Allies on NATO’s eastern flank against Russian aggression.
Merkel, for her part, said the two countries had a close partnership and hoped that it would continue after her resignation as federal chancellor after the September parliamentary elections.
