US and EU buried after 17 years of hatchet over aircraft makers

The quarrel between the United States and the European Union over the two largest aircraft manufacturers in the world is coming to a temporary end after 17 years. US President Biden and European Commission President von der Leyen have agreed to bury the hatchet for at least five years and to put an end to sanctions.

Cheese makers, whiskey distillers and sweet potato growers, among others, have been dragged into the conflict in recent years that revolved around the battle between the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the American aircraft manufacturer Boeing. The two aircraft manufacturers jointly control the market and are helped with government money. Both the United States and the European Union complain about the support the other gives.

As a punishment for the European Union, the US government introduced tariffs on $7.5 billion worth of European products, such as airplanes, French wine and cheeses. The European Union subsequently imposed additional taxes on $4 billion worth of American goods, including on airplanes, tractors and whiskey.
