U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken initially voiced controversy or bullying in the South China Sea and warned the UN Security Council that a conflict would have serious global consequences for security and trade. China responded strongly to the comments.

The South China Sea has been one of many flashpoints in the difficult relationship between China and the United States, where Washington rejects what it calls territorial claims by Beijing in the region that violate international law.
