BRASÍLIA (dpa-AFX) – After the change of power in the White House, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo and Environment Minister Ricardo Salles discussed ways of cooperating in the fight against climate change and deforestation with US climate officer John Kerry. “We have agreed to deepen the bilateral dialogue in the above-mentioned areas, with frequent meetings in search of sustainable and lasting solutions to common climate challenges,” said a video conference in a statement from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.

It was expected that the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his administration would face headwinds from the new US President Joe Biden because of the deforestation and the fires in Brazil’s Amazon region, especially in environmental and climate policy. In the event of further destruction, Biden had announced “significant economic consequences” during the US election campaign. / Mfa / DP / fba
