Romania and the United States want to build democratic, more inclusive and more prosperous societies, said the US ambassador to Bucharest, Kathleen Kavalec, on Wednesday, at the Independence Day reception.

“We are delighted to have you here, to celebrate together the 247th anniversary of the birth of the United States of America in true Californian style, as in San Diego, honoring the history, people and diversity that have made the United States the vibrant democracy it is today. from today.

I am delighted to be in Bucharest again, after 15 years, to participate in another Independence Day celebration with our Romanian friends, who share our love for freedom, respect for human dignity and diversity, and our commitment to peace and security .

Democratic values are at the heart of our strong and sustainable strategic partnership. Romania and the United States want to build democratic, more inclusive and prosperous societies where our peoples – and our children, and their children – can flourish and succeed.

These shared values are why we stand united against Russia’s unprovoked and horrific attack on Ukraine. Together with NATO allies, we offer support to the Ukrainian people in these difficult times.

The Romanians welcomed the millions of Ukrainian refugees with open arms, with tea and cake. The Romanian government offers invaluable aid to Ukraine. Your generosity is touching and will not be forgotten. Romania’s determination to stand by Ukraine and its NATO partners, in defense of democracy, international peace and security, is a model for all of us. Russia’s aggression demonstrates clearly why our strategic partnership, going from strength to strength for 25 years, is so important to our defense and resilience. We are grateful to Romania for hosting over 3,000 US troops, along with other allied forces, here on NATO’s eastern flank.

This presence not only allows us to train together, to improve the capabilities of allies, but also helps us to ensure that Romania’s borders are secured and that we can sleep more peacefully.

Our partnership is also built on strong economic ties between our countries, ties that have continued to develop. Trade with Romania has tripled in the last 15 years, reaching a value of over 5 billion dollars annually. The number of American companies present here has doubled, reaching almost 1,000.

We are proud that our companies have contributed to Romania’s economic growth, providing more than 110,000 jobs. Many of the American companies are with us this evening, and I would like to thank them for their vital contribution to our bilateral relations.

Another essential part of the Romania-USA Strategic Partnership is the long history of relations between our peoples. From George Enescu and Maria Tănase to Louis Armstrong and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, we have enjoyed a whole series of exchanges and cooperation in the field of art, education and business, which have intensified in the context in which our world has become more interconnected than ever.

The benefits of this close partnership are on both sides. The United States has benefited enormously from the talent of Romanians. Technology companies created by Romanians such as BitDefender and Ui-Path have become a brand in the United States, and I understand that Romanian is the second language spoken in Microsoft branches all over the world.

George Palade, Nobel laureate and father of cell biology, helped develop the biology program at the University of San Diego, California, where our daughter now studies. And our son recently obtained a degree in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley, which hosts the world-renowned Romanian in the field of cyber security, Professor Raluca Ada Popa.

Speaking of California, tonight we celebrate my hometown of San Diego and its incredible diversity, history and rich heritage.

The history of California is a little different than that of the East Coast of the United States. The place where I grew up was once the home of Native American tribes, then part of the Spanish ceded lands, then Mexican territory before becoming a US state in 1849. Today, San Diego honors the legacy of its first inhabitants, welcoming with open arms newcomers and immigrants from all over the world, including Romania!

With strong ties to Mexico and the Pacific Islands, San Diego is a center of commerce, education, technology, and defense. It’s the second largest city in California and a pretty nice place to live. Spanish is a second language spoken, and like San Diego, many of our cities have Spanish names. We love Mexican food, which you will taste tonight too.

In San Diego, we enjoy hitting the beach with our surfboards in VW buggies and low-rider cars, some of which are on display here tonight. And we’re listening to both beach rock and mariachi bands, which you’ll also hear tonight.

That being said, I think our biggest asset is diversity. California emphasizes acceptance of all, regardless of their origin or heritage and culture. In California, we have discovered that the formula of respect and acceptance, where we value the contributions of each member of society, does not only bring us success. It brings us even more joy!

Let me close with this quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, because we Californians look beyond to the rest of the world. She said: “True patriotism comes from a belief in individual dignity – freedom and equality, not just for Americans, but for all people.” We are, as a Californian proverb says, “A big state for big dreams”.

So thank you for being with us tonight. We have so much to celebrate in United States-Romania relations. I sincerely hope you will enjoy, if only for one evening, the taste of my great home state, California,” said the US Ambassador.
