Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
United States of America allow a booster or third dose of vaccine Covid-19 for people who have a weak immune system. The decision was taken in the midst of efforts to reduce the spread of the delta variant.
The decision to administer the third injection of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines was made on the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“The country has entered a new wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and the FDA is particularly aware that people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk for severe disease,” said FDA official Janet Woodcock.
In particular, the FDA stressed that additional doses of the vaccine would be given to organ transplant recipients as well as people with weakened immune systems.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee backed the decision Friday, after publishing recommendations for a third dose for healthcare workers.
The plan is that at the end of August, US CDC scientists will gather again to review data on potential third doses of the Covid-19 vaccine for other community groups such as people over 65 years old, nursing home residents, and nurses.
The permit to boost the Covid-19 vaccine in the US follows the steps taken by Israel. The Israeli government has started to give the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to citizens aged 50 years and over and health workers.
Giving this booster vaccine is called ignoring the advice from the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO called on countries in the world to postpone the third injection because of the gap in vaccine coverage.
WHO urges countries that can provide booster vaccines should donate these doses to developing countries with low vaccination rates.
