“US Air Force Recruit Faces 25 Years in Prison for Significant Leaks on War in Ukraine”

According to documents filed by prosecutors, the US Air Force had repeatedly reported the young recruit’s suspicious behavior.

Indicted last month for distributing a series of confidential documents, Jack Teixeira had already received several warnings for misusing his access to sensitive information, according to court documents.

The 21-year-old is accused of using his position as a computer specialist with the US Air National Guard to share important classified documents on an online forum, including about the war in Ukraine. This is one of the most significant leaks for the United States in the past decade.

Prosecutors pushing for his continued detention until trial added several documents – partly redacted – to their case on Wednesday. Some show that the US Air Force had already reported the suspicious behavior of the young recruit several times.

Notes taken despite orders to the contrary

One of the documents, dated September 15, 2022, specifies for example that Jack Teixeira had been “observed taking notes on classified information” and “had been instructed not to take any more notes, in any form whatsoever. , on confidential information”.

Another, dated the following month, indicates that the soldier had not complied with the order received. His superiors then told him again “to cease his research on classified information and to concentrate on his work”, according to the memo.

In vain, since Jack Teixeira was again caught in January 2023 “consulting content that was not related to his main occupation but to the intelligence sector”, according to a third document.

Teixeira faces 25 years in prison

Despite these numerous reports, the young man, hired in September 2019, was able to keep his “top secret” security clearance until his arrest, according to the federal police (FBI).

Arrested on April 13, a few days after the revelation of the leaks and their content in several American media, Jack Teixeira faces 25 years in prison at this stage. A judge must decide on Friday whether or not to keep him in pre-trial detention.
