A US Air Force employee was arrested last weekend for allegedly leaking information via an online dating platform. It go according to the US Department of Justice, not a soldier, but a civilian employee with access to secret files.
According to the ministry, this is a 63-year-old man who retired in April 2022. He worked for the overarching command center and had access to top secret dossiers.
During his last months of service, the man was active on a dating site. Through the platform he came into conversation with someone who claimed to be a woman in Ukraine. She regularly asked the man for information, which he also provided. The alleged wife called the man her “secret love agent.”
According to the US Department of Defense, the man was regularly present at discussions about the situation in Ukraine shortly after Russia invaded the country. The man is said to have passed on information about military objectives and Russia’s military strength in Ukraine.
The American justice department does not want to elaborate further on what exactly the information concerns. According to the prosecutor, this concerns “information relating to the security of our country, which enemies could have used against the United States”.
The man will appear in court on Wednesday. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each offense committed.
