Currently Beijing and Washington are building and testing many more new generation hypersonic weapons.
“There is an arms race, not necessarily for an increase in numbers, but for an increase in quality,” Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told Reuters during an interview at the Pentagon office.

He added, “This is an arms race that has been going on for quite some time. The Chinese have done it very aggressively.”

In October, the top US military officer, General Mark Milley, confirmed tests of China’s hypersonic weapons which military experts said appeared to show Beijing designed an Earth-orbiting weapon system to evade American missile defenses.

This year the Pentagon has conducted several tests of hypersonic weapons with mixed success.
