On Wednesday, the Houthis attacked the Marshall Islands-registered cargo ship “Genco Picardy” in the Red Sea, according to spokesman Yahya Saree. The attack took place about 120 kilometers southeast of the port city of Aden in Yemen.

– Our naval forces will not hesitate to attack any threat in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea in accordance with the right to defend Yemen and support the oppressed Palestinian population, he said, according to Reuters.

The cargo ship is said to have been attacked with missiles, and was registered by the UK Maritime Operations Organization (UKMTO) earlier in the evening. The security company Ambrey has also registered the attack.

The ship caught fire as a result of the attack, but the fire was extinguished.

Later on Wednesday evening, Reuters reported that a drone launched from areas controlled by the Houthi rebels in Yemen hit a US-owned vessel in the Gulf of Aden, according to the US military.

No injured people have been reported, but the vessel has been damaged, the US Central Command writes on X.

The vessel is a bulk carrier that flies the flag to the Marshall Islands, it says.

The incidents take place just one day after the Malta-registered, Greek-owned cargo ship “Zografia” was hit by a missile in the Red Sea.

Recently, the United States and Great Britain have carried out several attacks in Yemen to reduce the military capacity of the Houthis, as well as to deter the militia from carrying out new attacks. The latest attack took place on Tuesday afternoon.

The Houthis terrorist list again

Now the US has also chosen to list the Houthis as terrorists again, after removing them from the list in February 2021. Security adviser Jake Sullivan states that the purpose of this is to gag the Houthis and hold them responsible for the attacks in the Red Sea.

– If the Houthis stop the attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the US will immediately reconsider this, says Sullivan.

– As President Joe Biden has said, the United States will not hesitate to take further action to protect our people and international shipping.

Recently the United States also claimed to have seized parts for Iranian-made ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, which are said to have been on their way to the Houthis. The seizure was made in a sailboat in the Arabian Sea, near the coast of Somalia.

– It is quite clear that Iran continues to supply the Houthis with advanced, lethal weapons. This is yet another example of how Iran actively seeks to create instability in the region, stated General Michael Erik Kurilla.
