The United States accused Russia on Tuesday night of firing at least nine North Korean missiles at Ukraine, and Moscow called Washington a “direct accomplice” in the downing of a Russian jet last month, Reuters reported.
Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzya and US deputy permanent representative Robert Wood exchanged accusations during a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine called at Moscow’s request.
Russia and China vs. the United States in the UN Security Council
Russia invaded Ukraine almost two years ago.
“To date, Russia has launched North Korean-supplied ballistic missiles against Ukraine at least nine times,” Wood told the 15-member UN Security Council, using North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
“Russia and North Korea must be held accountable for their actions that undermine long-standing obligations under UN Security Council resolutions,” he added.

Both Moscow and Pyongyang deny the US accusations, but last year pledged to deepen their military relationship, Reuters notes. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has strengthened its ties with North Korea and other countries hostile to the United States, such as Iran. These relations are a source of concern for the West.
A Russian Air Force Il-76 fell from the sky on January 24. Russia said all 74 people on board, including 65 captured Ukrainian soldiers about to be exchanged for Russian prisoners, had died, and accused Kiev of shooting down the plane.
“We have irrefutable evidence that a Patriot surface-to-air missile was used to carry out the strike, which leaves no doubt that Washington is a direct accomplice in this crime as well,” Nebenzia told the Security Council.
The UN will consider part of the genocide case between Ukraine and Russia
Last week, Russian investigators said they had evidence showing the Ukrainian military shot down the military transport plane with US-made Patriot surface-to-air missiles.
Russia asked the Council to meet yesterday after it said Ukraine killed at least 28 people when it used Western-supplied missiles to hit a bakery and restaurant in Russian-controlled eastern Ukraine on Saturday.
Russia: The US is “sowing chaos” in the Middle East
Ukraine’s top diplomat at the UN, Serhii Dvornyk, accused Russia of abusing the Security Council “to spread fakes”.
Wood said the US was unable to verify the information through independent sources, blaming the lack of independent media, but expressed regret for all the civilian casualties. “To be clear, Russia is the only aggressor in this war and the only one that can end this war today,” he added.
