A 3-year-old girl accidentally killed her one-year-old sister with a gun in Texas. The investigation must determine if the parents are responsible for the tragedy.
A 3-year-old girl, who had found a semi-automatic pistol at her parents’ house, fatally shot her one-year-old sister. The drama took place this Sunday in Houston, in the American state of Texas.
The local authorities, relayed by the American media, including CBS, reported that the girls were in a room of the family apartment when the facts occurred, around 8 p.m. Five adults were present: his mother, his stepfather, as well as relatives. The girls were allegedly left unattended involuntarily.
A single bullet was fired, and the little girl was declared dead by paramedics. An investigation has been opened, and must determine whether the parents will be prosecuted.
19,000 children killed or injured by firearms per year
County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez urged adults to keep their guns in “secure” places. “We have to do more than just tell the children not to touch it,” he told reporters.
According to the NGO Everytown for Gun Safety, some 19,000 children and adolescents are killed or injured by firearms each year in the United States. Since the beginning of 2023, at least 58 children have been injured or killed by firearms, notes the organization.
