Bodily issues
Uruguay’s record goalscorer Luis Suárez is leaving the traditional Brazilian club Gremio Porto Alegre after this season. “I felt physically strong enough to stay two years, that’s what I asked the club for,” said the 36-year-old Suárez at a press conference. But he has to be honest with himself, with his body, with the club. “In the coming year I won’t be able to bring Gremio what is expected of me because of the intensity of Brazilian football.”
There had been some speculation in recent weeks about the sporting future of the striker, who suffers from chronic knee pain. Among other things, there was an early move to the MLS club Inter Miami, which had managed a transfer coup with Lionel Messi. Argentinian Messi, Uruguayan Suárez and Brazilian Neymar had already formed a successful attacking trio at FC Barcelona.

Suárez only returned to his home country last summer after 16 years in Europe’s leagues, joining Nacional de Montevideo. At his youth club, Suárez also wanted to get in shape for the World Cup. In Qatar, however, the former attacking star of Atlético Madrid, Barça and Liverpool FC was eliminated with Uruguay in the preliminary round. Gremio, winner of the 1983 World Cup, announced the signing of the goalscorer on New Year’s Eve.
