Uruguayan Exports by Department: Ranking and Main Products in 2022

The Uruguay XXI Institute prepared a report on the Uruguayan exports of goods by department of 2022. Last year it had record exports with beef, cellulose and soybeans as the main products.

Colonia, Montevideo and Canelones were the three departments that led the ranking Uruguayan exporter and each one of them with particular characteristics. Between the three concentrated 56.4% of sales of goods abroad.

Colonia had 22.8%, highlighting exports from free zones. In the apartment there areThe industrial pulp production plants in Montes del Plata and the PepsiCo beverage concentrate plant. It also had exports of soy, beef and malt.

Montevideo had a 19.1% share last year. Due to its territorial extension and the fact that it has a mainly urban population, its participation in agricultural production is marginal. For these reasons, the goods exported from the department were mostly industrialized products. The main ones were vehicles, soybeans, wood and by-products, margarine and oils, and beef.

Cannelloni was the third with 14.5%. It has a wide variety of export industries, many of them linked to the transformation of agricultural products, although it also exportsto pharmaceuticals, dairy, plastics and wood.

The fourth place was for Río Negro, which had a participation of 8.3% of the total exported. The main product sold abroad was pulp from the production of the first UPM plant in Fray Bentos. It also sold soybeans, dairy products, and wheat.

San José was in fifth place of the year with 7.7% of the total. The department concentrates a good production of dairy products, beef, plastics and wool, among others.

The fourteen remaining departments accounted for 27.6% of total exports. The year closed with external sales for US$ 13,275 million, with a year-on-year increase of 22%.

In the breakdown by amounts, Colonia exported US$3,030 million, Montevideo reached US$2,533 million and Canelones reached US$1,921 million. Río Negro had exports for US$1,108 million and San José for US$1,028 million.

The fourteen remaining departments totaled sales abroad for US$ 3,655 million.

Main products in dollars

Bovine meat was the main exported product with US$ 2,550 million. Canelones led the list of exporting departments with placements for US$1,041 million (41% share of the total), followed by Tacuarembó with US$287 (11%), and Durazno with US$279 million.

Soy was the second product with US$ 1,917 million. The first department was Colonia with US$708 million (37%), then Soriano with US$350 million (18%) and Montevideo with US$299 million (16%).

Cellulose was in third place with exports for US$ 1,884 million that left Colonia, with the productions of Montes del Plata and the first UPM plant.

In fourth place were dairy products. San José exported US$486 million (55%), Florida had sales of US$170 million (19%) and Durazno with US$84 million (10%).

Beverage concentrates were in fifth place with US$ 678 million and all exports from Colonia.

UPM second plant

Uruguay XXI pointed out that the third pulp mill (UPM’s second located in Pueblo Centenario, Durazno) will have significant impacts in the country, not only economic but also social and infrastructure.

The report indicated that with the third plant now operational, foreign sales of goods will increase considerably and pulp will become Uruguay’s main export product.

He added that Durazno will have a considerably higher contribution to Uruguayan exports of goods.
