Uruguay collapsed at headquarters Ecuador in the next round qualifying for the 2022 World Cup CONMEBOL zone. Luis Suarez et al give up 2-4.
The Ecuador vs Uruguay match was held at the Estadio de Liga Deportiva Universitaria, Wednesday (14/10/2020) in the morning WIB. The duel between the two Latin American teams was broadcast live on Mola TV this link.
Ecuador took the initiative to attack from the early minutes of the match. As a result, the goal for the home team came in the 15th minute.
Moises Caicedo listed his name on the scoreboard. The Ecuadorian midfielder welcomed Angel Mena’s corner with a header into the Uruguay goal, giving his team a 1-0 lead.
Ecuador again broke into Uruguay’s goal in the 34th minute through Michael Estrada. However, the goal was canceled after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) assessed that there had been a violation committed before the goal occurred.
Estrada scored Ecuador’s second goal in stoppage time towards the end of the first half. The 24-year-old striker fired a shot in the penalty box which tore Uruguay’s nets.
Score 2-0 for Ecuador’s advantage lasted until entering the break.
First half statistics show Ecuador dominated the game with 10 shots and 54 percent possession. Meanwhile, Uruguay only once made an effort to threaten the home team’s goal.
In the second half, Uruguay stepped on the gas and scored a goal in the 48th minute through Darwin Nunez’s kick ball. The visitors’ goal was disallowed after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) showed.
Goal! Ecuador scored their third goal of the match this time around in the 52nd minute. Estrada kicked the ball in the middle of a siege by a Uruguayan defender who was rushing through the goalkeeper Martin Campana. Home team 3-0 lead.
Gonzalo Plata led Ecuador 4-0 away in the 75th minute. Getting the ball from Alan Franco, he kicked the ball from close range which rattled Uruguay’s nets.
The visitors reduced the position to 1-4 with 12 kick fitting Suarez in the 85th minute. Penalty awarded to Uruguay after Diego Palacios’ foul in the forbidden box.
Uruguay again received a penalty in the final minutes of the match, after Xavier Arreaga handball in the penalty box. Suarez for the second time stepped forward as the executor and managed to break into the Ecuadorian goal.
The match ends with a score of 4-2 to win Ecuador. This victory makes Ecuador move up to fourth place in the CONMEBOL Zone standings with three points from two matches, while Uruguay are below it with the same points.
