Uruguay Crowned U-20 World Cup Champions After Beating Italy 1-0

Uruguay managed to become champions 2023 U-20 World Cup after defeating Italy with a score of 1-0 at the Estadio Unico Diego Armando Maradnoa, Sunday (11/6) local time.

Uruguay dominated the game since the first half started. Anderson Duarte and his friends continued to put pressure on the Italian defense.

Italy then spent more time defending than trying to build up attacks. Italian goalkeeper, Sebastiano Desplanches was forced to work hard throughout the first half which ended in a goalless draw.

Entering the second half, Uruguay was still the team that dominated more attacks. In contrast, Italy has not given much of a threat to Uruguay’s defense.

Italy coach, Carmine Nunziata then decided to make a number of substitutions to change the flow of the game. Mattia Zanotti, Daniele Montevago and Francesco Pio Esposito took to the field.

The Uruguay vs Italy fight itself was hard and fierce. Several clashes occurred between the two players. Desplanches is a player who often clashes when trying to secure a goal.

Even though Uruguay continued to attack and press, the Italian defense commanded by Daniele Ghilardi was able to appear quite solid.

In the 80th minute, Italy must be prepared to play with 10 men. Referee Glenn Nyberg immediately raised a red card after Matteo Prati put his foot into Andreas Ferrari’s knee.

However, after the referee saw the VAR display, the referee finally annulled the decision and only gave a yellow card.

After repeatedly sending wavy attacks, Uruguay was finally able to break into Italy’s goal in the 86th minute through Luciano Rodriguez. Rodriguez was in the right position to head the ball into the goal when chaos occurred in the Italian penalty box.

The referee had a discussion with the VAR referee after that moment and validated the goal.

Italy tried to find a goal equalizing the position, including when the referee gave 11 minutes of added time. But they still have difficulty carrying out attacks on the Uruguayan defense. Score 1-0 for Uruguay lasted until the end of the game.
