The Uruguayan and Paraguayan national football teams secured a place in the quarter-finals of the South American national team’s Copa America national team on Thursday. First, Uruguay beat Bolivia 2: 0 (1: 0).
Uruguay took the lead in the 40th minute when Bolivian defender Hairo Kinteross fired the ball into his goal, unable to save goalkeeper Carlos Lampa. Lampe’s defense sent a ball soaring up the middle on a beautiful counterattack with 79 minutes gone, but Edinson Kavani’s finish was met by the reaching hands of the keeper.
Meanwhile, Paraguay was 2-0 (1: 0) superior to Chile. Paraguay’s first goal was scored by Brian Samudio, who headed the ball into the goal after 33 minutes. In the 58th minute, Miguel Almiron scored an 11-meter penalty and doubled the lead of Paraguay’s team.
On Monday, Uruguay and Paraguay will play a match, in which the team that will meet with Brazil in the quarterfinals will be determined. Chile may also find itself in a situation where it would have to play against the current champions and home Brazilians.
In sub-group A, Argentina is in first place with seven points in three games, Paraguay has six points, Chile has five points in four duels, Uruguay has four points, but Bolivia is in the bass and will not participate in the playoffs. The Qatari and Australian national teams have refused to take part in the tournament, as a result of which Copa America is taking place this year with the participation of ten national teams, divided into two groups of five each. The four strongest teams in each group will enter the playoffs.
The Confederacy of South American Football (CONMEBOL) has moved this year’s Copa America tournament to Brazil because Argentina has been deprived of it due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but unrest has erupted in Colombia. The host country changed only two weeks before the start of Copa America, the South American football championship.
Already on May 20, Colombia was deprived of the status of an organizing country due to the protests of the population against the President of Colombia Ivan Duki. The tournament will take place as planned, from June 13 to July 10. This is the 47th Copa America competition. The first took place in 1916.
Uruguay has lifted the winners’ cup most often – 15 times. Argentina has less than one victory, but Brazil has won nine times. In the last Copa America tournament, which was held in 2019, Brazil defeated Peru 3: 1 in the final. The third place was won by Argentina.
