Uruguay and Paraguay advance to Copa America quarter-finals

Uruguay and Paraguay qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa America on Thursday, beating Bolivia (2-0), Cuiaba, and Chile (2-0) respectively. These two results eliminate the Bolivians, last of group A, who cannot mathematically advance to the next round.

For Uruguay, the opening goal came on a cross from Giorgian De Arrascaeta deflected by Bolivian defender Jairo Quinteros then by his goalkeeper Carlos Lampe (40th). Edinson Cavani then doubled the lead, taking back a perfect cross from young Facundo Torres (79th). This is the 52nd goal of the “Matador” in selection.

The group stage ends on Monday

For its part, Paraguay defeated Chile, which had already qualified, thanks to a header from Braian Samudio (33rd) and a penalty from Miguel Almiron (58th). Behind Argentina, who dominate Group A with seven points, are now Paraguay (six points), Chile (five) and Uruguay (four).

In Group B, the last day is scheduled for Sunday and will feature the Brazil-Ecuador and Peru-Venezuela posters, Colombia being exempt. Brazilians and Colombians have already qualified for the quarter-finals. The group stage of the Copa America will end on Monday, with the final meetings of Group A (Uruguay-Paraguay and Argentina-Bolivia).
