Uruguay and Argentina Meat Consumption Trends: 2023 Data and Changes Over the Last 10 Years

Meat consumption in Uruguay in 2023 was 94 kilos per person and reached its highest level since 2015, when it had totaled 98.6 kilos, according to data from the National Meat Institute (INAC).

The increase compared to 2022 was 1.5 kilos per person, with increases in the intake of beef, pork and sheep and a decrease of almost a kilo in poultry protein. But if you take the last 10 years you can see substantive changes in consumer habits.

In 2013, the last year in which Uruguayans consumed more than 100 kilos per person per year of all meats, the vaccine represented almost 60% of the total with 59.4 kg. By 2023, beef consumption will drop by almost 14 kilos, 23% in 10 years, and will now represent 48% of the total.

In the same period, poultry meat (mainly chicken) grew by 15% and pork grew by 30%. Sheep meat consumption fell almost 50% between 2013 and 2021 and has rebounded in the last two years.

What happens in Argentina

In Argentina, for its part, per capita consumption rose about two kilos per person in 2023 despite the increase in the cost of living and reached 113 kilos annually, the maximum since 2018.

Total consumption in Argentina has remained more stable over the last 10 years, although with important changes. As happened in Uruguay, beef production fell sharply, from 63 to 50 kilos per year (-20%), poultry meat grew by 15% and pork meat grew by 70%, from 10 to 17 kilos per year.

Argentina consumes less than 1.5 kilos of sheep meat per capita, with a minority presence at the urban level and up to 25 kilos annually in rural Patagonian sheep-producing areas.

In the comparison between Uruguay and Argentina, the most relevant thing is that the last year in which Uruguayans ate more beef than Argentines was in 2014. And that in the last 10 years the increase in chicken consumption in Argentina was noticeably close to the beef numbers: in 2013 each Argentine ate 23 kilos of beef more than poultry and in 2023 only 4.

In Uruguay, beef is still separated from meat and chicken, which compete a couple of steps below, on the axis of 20 to 25 kilos per year, with an upward trajectory since 2020.
