President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen65, has announced that he will seek a second term, reports the British newspaper Guardian.
von der Leyen, who represents the Christian Democrats of Germany (CDU), confirmed his willingness at a party meeting in Berlin on Monday.
Leader of the CDU party Friedrich Merz said that von der Leyen was appointed unanimously and that he is working to ensure that the election is also unanimous in the EPP group. The center-right EPP group of the European Parliament will choose its top candidate at its party meeting in Bucharest, Romania, in early March. The president of the EU Commission will be elected in June.
– I make a well-informed and considered decision. I want to run for a second term and I am very grateful to the CDU for nominating me today, von der Leyen said.
– I ran for office in 2019 because I firmly believe in Europe. Europe is home to me. When I was asked if I could imagine being the President of the European Commission, I immediately said yes.
According to him, the biggest challenges of the next season are, among other things, the EU’s economic competitiveness and security policy.
Von der Leyen has been president of the EU Commission since July 2019.
