Proudly, Uriel and Jeremías show the Argentine flag with the BioSpi logo in France.
Second place in France
Uriel reminded Diario UNO that “first we were selected among the 5 best startups in America. We joined the 5 best in Europe and the 5 best in Asia. All of us chosen prevailed among more than 350 projects.”
A student at the National University of San Luis, Miralles told Diario UNO that they were the first to arrive in France and that to pay the entrance ticket to the event he had to work as a volunteer for a whole day in different activities.
“We spent two days at the assigned stand on a property where almost 7 thousand people passed by. They approached us to consult with us and in 2 or 3 minutes we explained our project to them. We made many contacts there and there were several interested in being part of BioSpi,” he continued his story.
The best thing was that investors and leaders in synthetic biology in the world came to us. We had very good reviews and that lifted our spirits. The best thing was that investors and leaders of synthetic biology in the world approached us. We had very good reviews and that raised our spirits.
The competition covered three categories: Biomonofacturing and Software (that of Uriel and Jere), Medicine and Diagnostics and Food and Agriculture.
From discouragement to excitement
Miralles highlighted that “the jury was very demanding. With Jere we saw that everything went well with our presentation and with the responses to the evaluators, all of them prestigious, representatives of well-known companies in the world, investment funds, specialists in regulations… “
But he immediately clarified: “They gave us good reviews although we ended up discouraged because the other projects were at a higher stage or stage, backed by important universities and large companies. That lowered our expectations.”
“We were even more discouraged,” he recalled, “when they started with the special mentions and we didn’t appear in any of them. But suddenly Jeremías realized that we were on the screen among the best. “We were very excited to know that we won in our category and we went to the final with the other two categories.”
Miralles and Conrero had to present again and added key concepts and data: “We had regained so much enthusiasm that we thought we could win the final but we came second. Once again it hit us like a downer. Of course, then when it was cold we realized that we were second in the world and we were super excited.”

On the flag carried by Moralles and Conrero, you can see above the mention of the municipalities from which they are from: Lavalle (Mendoza) and Pozo del Valle (Córdoba).
Who is Uriel?
Uriel Miralles was born in Lavalle, he is a former basketball player and an advanced student at the Faculty of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmacy of the National University of San Luis.
He studies and lives in San Luis and returns to Lavalle at least once a month. His mother, his father, his two younger brothers and his girlfriend are waiting for him there. There are also his aunt and cousins and the friends and friends who he reaped during his time at Nuestra Señora del Rosario primary and secondary school and as a basketball player.
Tall, almost two meters (1.95 to be precise), Miralles began to stand out as a power forward in the teams of the Municipality of Lavalle. He also put on the shirt San José Sports Union, club that saw good conditions for him and took him.
But then he went to San Luis and there he signed for one of the most important clubs in that province, notable for its participation in federal competitions: GEPU (Pedernera United Gymnastics and Fencing).
The study consumed his time and he had to leave basketball to fully immerse himself in his career and that is how now, at 23 years old, he is in his fourth year, the penultimate year he has left to graduate from the Faculty of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmacy.
Uriel’s companion
Jeremiah Conrero He is Uriel Miralles’ partner in the vaccine project against Campylobacter. He lives and works in his hometown, Pozo del Molle, Córdoba, located about 200 kilometers from the capital of that province.
He is 25 years old, two years older than his friend from Mendoza with whom he is a founding partner of BioSpi. He is a senior technician in Mechatronics, graduated from the Córdoba headquarters of the National Technological University. He tells of his journey through Mendoza because he studied Mechatronic Engineering for three years at UNCuyo.
In their city they carry out tasks all morning at the Agromec company and in the afternoon they connect with Uriel to work on the project that they both drive. He met Uri precisely in Mendoza at a science, technology and innovation congress.

BioSpi’s work
BioSpi is a research project, created by Miralles and Conrero, that aspires to be a company dedicated to biotechnology with an innovative approach to sustainable biological therapies. It is currently developing a low-cost, sustainable, oral vaccine that does not require injection or refrigeration to treat campylobacteriosis. This disease is a chronic diarrhea caused by a bacteria called campylobacter, which is resistant to antibiotics and has a greater effect on broiler chickens.
Together with scientists from the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (Conicet-UNSL), the Catholic University of Cuyo and the Center for Photosynthetic and Biochemical Studies (Cefobi) in Rosario, the students proposed an innovative solution to be able to face this disease of fattening farms.
It is not necessary to leave the country, but locally you can export the knowledge that you are generating. With BioSpi we are doing it little by little. It is not necessary to leave the country, but from the local area you can export the knowledge that you are generating. With BioSpi we are slowly doing it
These days, the creators of BioSpi, already in Argentina, are among the 10 finalists of a technopreneur contest at the Balseiro Institute, in Bariloche.
