Uriel Canjura, an athlete from the Effort and Glory Program, will compete in the XXVII Yonex Pan Am Individual Championships 2024, which will take place in Guatemala from April 10 to 13, a competition with which he will close his qualification route for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Prior to the competition, Uriel, along with Javier Alas and Gabriela Barrios, also E&G beneficiaries, train in a Pan American camp with other athletes from the region in Guatemalan territory.
Jaime Alas, Melvin Calzadilla, E&G athletes will also compete in Guatemala; Manuel Mejía and Marlon Vides.
In women, Fátima Centeno, Daniela Hernández, Daniela Barrios and Margaret Revelo, who belong to the Effort and Glory Program, will travel to Guatemalan territory.
The continental tournament in Chapin territory is the last tournament that will assign points for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, so Uriel will try to reach the quarterfinals to add and keep open his chances of achieving a place directly.
Canjura is in 28th position with a score of 26,779 and a total of 15 tournaments played so far in the Olympic qualification ranking.
“The chances of classification for Uriel are great, 80 or 90%. If he reaches the quarterfinals in the tournament the other week in Guatemala, he would achieve the necessary points to stay within the 32 classified in the Olympic ranking,” explained René Madrid, national coach of the Salvadoran Badminton Federation (Fesalbad).
In the badminton world ranking, Canjura is located in box number 56 with 31,059 points and is sixteenth at the Pan American level.
In badminton, 35 individual places will be awarded for men and the same number for women, but each list will be based on the results obtained between May 1, 2023 and April 28, 2024.
Canjura is the only Salvadoran badminton athlete with the possibility of directly qualifying for the Olympic Games and if he secures his place, he would be the first badminton player from El Salvador to compete in the greatest Olympic sports event.
“After the classification is closed you have to wait a month for official confirmation. “It is the first time that we have a badminton athlete with the possibility of qualifying for the Olympic Games,” said René Madrid.
