Mexico CityUriel Antuna began the summer dreaming of a move to Europe that ultimately did not come to fruition. The forward has already turned the page and will now focus on a new stage of his career with Tigres in Liga MX.
The 27-year-old national team player arrived in Monterrey today to undergo physical and medical tests before signing his contract with the felines. The midfielder ended a cycle with Cruz Azul where he played in the last five league tournaments.
“I am happy for this new challenge in my life, with excellent players and people,” Antuna told reporters at the Monterrey airport. “I have spoken with several of them before and I am happy to be here.”
After a Clausura tournament in which he scored eight goals and finished tied with three other players as the top scorer, Antuna received offers to go to Greek football with AEK Athens, but the negotiations did not prosper.
While negotiating his exit, the Argentine coach of La Máquina, Martín Anselmi, cut his playing time and Antuna asked to leave for another club.
“Tigres is a big institution, I think they have the best fans in Mexico and when I came as a rival I got goosebumps. Now it’s my turn to be here,” said the player.
Antuna began his career with Santos de Torreón, then was signed by Manchester City, but never wore the colors of the English club. He was loaned to Groningen in Holland, where he spent a couple of years before moving to LA Galaxy in the MLS where he stayed for a year. The forward also played for Chivas.
