The teachers association of the canton of Uri (Lur) submitted more than 1,000 signatures on Tuesday in Altdorf against the elementary school order passed by the regional administrator. 450 signatures are required for the referendum to take place. The aim of the teachers is to prevent a “two class education system”.

In particular, the teachers are concerned about the wording “can” instead of “must” in the article about additional resources for large school classes. There is a risk that the financially stronger municipalities will use the resources and the less well off municipalities will reject them, said Sepp Wipfli, President of Lur, to the Keystone-SDA at the end of May.

The teachers are also accusing the canton of having shirked their financial obligations by using the selective vocabulary, at the expense of the school children. According to Lur, with the mandatory creation the canton would have to pay a third of the additional costsin the municipalities in the future. Now the communities had to bear the costs themselves.

With the referendum, the association wants to ensure that, if those with the right to vote say no, the district administrator will deal with the regulation again and replace the compulsory form requested by the government council. optional creation.

The SVP requested the optional form at the district council meeting in April as part of the review of the primary school order. A large part of the FDP and center supported this. Finally, Parliament approved the motion by 39 votes to 18.
