Cyber security researchers have just detected 29 malicious apps on the Play Store. These have accumulated nearly 3.2 million downloads, and most of them are invisible on the smartphone on which they are installed to flood you with advertisements.
Regularly, applications lying around on the Play Store are pinned for questionable practices. A month ago, for example, Avast identified eight malicious apps which made it possible to spy on relatives without their knowledge, without even being revealed on the victim’s smartphone. Although they were all removed from the Play Store, they could still be present on the smartphones on which they had been installed.
This time, it’s up to the team of cybersecurity researchers White Ops Satori Threat Intelligence and Research that one owes the discovery of new malicious applications. As with the apps mentioned above, they were quickly removed from the Playstore but could still be found in some users’ phones. There were 29 of these applications in the form of photo filters or mini games. Except that in reality, these housed a adware whose purpose was to display a large number of advertisements on the contaminated smartphone. Worse still, some of them could not even be closed manually by the user, and could go as far as rendering a smartphone unusable. Above all, most of these apps became invisible once installed. Since the icon is neither on the home screen nor in the application drawer, the victim of one of these apps could think that they were no longer present on the smartphone. In the background, they could then commit their package: bombard you with advertisements.
At the time of writing, these 29 apps have accumulated more than 3.2 million downloads. We cannot therefore advise you too much to take a tour on your smartphone and check if none of them are there. As they are invisible in the app drawer, you will necessarily have to go through the settings and then browse the list of all installed apps.
