Given the fact that in many countries the number of people infected with monkeypox is increasing, the World Health Organization (WHO) for the first time published specific recommendations for sexual behavior of people in the most risky groups, DPA reported.
According to the WHO, 98% of reported cases involve men who have had sexual contact with multiple other men. WHO asks the representatives of this group to reduce the number of their sexual partners for the time being, to refrain from sex with new partners, and when having sex with new partners – to exchange contacts with them, so that, if necessary, the transmission of the contagion.
However, the organization emphasized that anyone can be infected. “In addition to sexual transmission, monkeypox can also be spread through close contact between people in their homes, such as through hugs and kisses, as well as through infected towels or sheets,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said today. The contagion can be stopped “if countries, communities and individuals are informed, take the risks seriously and take the necessary steps to stop transmission and protect vulnerable groups,” Tedros said.
Regarding the monkeypox vaccination, there are still questions about the effectiveness of the vaccines and who exactly should be vaccinated. The WHO does not recommend mass vaccination, but “targeted vaccination of people who have come into contact with people infected with monkeypox and people at high risk of contact, including healthcare workers, some laboratory workers and people with multiple sexual partners”.
WHO has received information on more than 18,000 cases of monkeypox infection from 78 countries, with more than 70% of the cases of infection being registered in European countries, many of which have had no cases of this disease until now. Last week, the WHO declared the monkeypox epidemic an “emergency of international concern”.
