Blood is needed now. It is the message that comes to us from the Basque Donor Associations. Christmas has left the stocks of Transfusion Center at half gas. And it is that Interventions have plummeted by 50%a fact that has set off alarm bells.
At COPE Euskadi we have gone to the Association of Gipuzkoa Blood Donors to take an x-ray of the situation. Sabin Urcelaydoctor and president of the entity admits that the drop in donations in recent holidays is part of the usual calendar, but this year it has been added flu and coronavirus. “It’s like sales, donations always fall at Christmas, but the sick are not on vacation,” says Urcelay.
How long is blood preserved?
The main problem with blood is that it cannot be stored for more than two weeks. Hence the need to donate continually. Euskadi needs 400 people to donate blood every day to overcome the current problem. The goal now is to achieve the 8,000 interventions before the end of the month. The most popular blood groups are: 0+, 0-, A+, A- and B-.
Can I donate if I have just had the coronavirus?
All those who intend to donate blood this new year can do so if they meet the requirements and dedicate “half an hour of their life.” Thirty minutes that can save a life. And Urecelay insists that “98% of people can donate blood”. However, they must comply with the following: have more than 18 years old and less than 60, not weighing more than 50 kilos and an acceptable state of health.
If you have recently had the coronavirus, Urcelay recommends “donating after five days after the illness, that is, once the test has been negative.”
