Urgent Measures Needed to Address Worsening Asylum Reception Crisis, Says COA

Oct 22, 2023 at 11:55 p.m

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) believes that the government must take far-reaching measures to end the “extremely worrying” situation in asylum reception. That appears to be the case NRC from a letter from the COA board to the Ministry of Justice and Security and from conversations with sources.

For example, according to the letter, COA wants to be able to violate existing agreements with municipalities about the number of asylum seekers in a reception location.

“The quality of life and safety” at asylum seeker centers are under pressure, the letter said. In terms of capacity, asylum reception facilities are still “in the danger zone”. Although COA has sent letters to the Ministry of Justice more often in recent years, the tone has never been so desperate.

At the moment, two hundred new asylum seekers enter the Netherlands every day, for whom there are hardly any places. And the outlook for the coming months is “gloomy”, the board writes to the ministry. COA needs 6,500 to a maximum of 11,000 additional places before the end of the year, but ways to find them have been exhausted “within the current policy frameworks”.
