After the inflation of food and energy prices which have disastrous consequences for the inhabitants of our towns and villages, we are alerting to the increase in the price of school supplies for this start of the school year.
11.3% increase in supplies
They increase by 11.3% with increases of 29% for double copies or 22% for notebooks. It’s 43 euros more for a CP student. Consequence: 86% of families say they are in difficulty to buy school supplies in the second degree.
In our communities, we have taken, often for several years, measures to compensate for social inequalities between young people, whether by direct payment of school supplies or direct assistance to families.
A “scissor effect” on municipal budgets
However, our budgets are increasingly constrained by the scissor effect caused by the reduction in grants to municipalities and the exposure of charges linked to the rise in prices.
This situation is unacceptable. For us, the issue of equality for all students at school is major. This starts with realizing the fundamental principle of free education.
This is why we are asking the government to put in place an emergency intervention to ensure the management of free school supplies.
For free school canteens
At the same time, we demand the opening of a consultation with local elected officials on the subject of free canteens: too many children do not eat or do not eat enough in France and we are unfortunately too often witnesses to this.
The same applies to the subject of transport, school outings and textbooks in public schools, colleges and high schools. These efforts must be assumed by the State, whose role is to ensure equality, one of our founding values, in our republican school.
