Urgent Call for Blood Donors at Regional Hospital of Antofagasta

The Blood Bank of the Regional Hospital of Antofagasta is currently facing a significant decrease in its stock of red blood cells and platelets due to the increase in surgeries and care performed, as well as the decrease in waiting lists. Faced with this situation, they made an urgent call to all those who can donate blood, both men and women, to go to the health center facilities and become voluntary donors.

Doris Rasjido Gutiérrez, Medical Technologist at the Blood Bank, highlights the importance of altruistic voluntary donors, who provide vital support to society through their donations. Both men and women can donate blood, with a maximum of three donations per year for women and four for men. “In addition to red blood cells, we also need platelets and we have implemented a new procedure called platelet apheresis, which makes it possible to obtain the necessary platelets from a single donor instead of requiring six individual donors. This extraction process is carried out safely and within a period of five to three days, the donor’s body returns to its normal values”said Rasjido.

From the Regional Hospital of Antofagasta they recalled that, for those interested in donating, “We invite you to contact us through our Instagram @donasangreantofagasta or the contact telephone numbers 55-2443192 and 55-2442083, where you can obtain more information and schedule an appointment. However, given the current low stock, there are approximately 60 daily slots for donations, so at this time it is not necessary to schedule a prior appointment. Service hours are from 8:15 am to 4:15 pm, with attention to a donor every 15 minutes. In the event that the daily attention capacity is complete, a shift will be assigned for the day in which the person can better organize themselves and make their donation.reported the Medical Technologist of the Blood Bank.

Likewise, Doris Rasjido also clarifies some requirements and conditions to be a blood donor. “Those with tattoos can donate, as long as a minimum period of six months has passed since the tattoo was made, due to the window period necessary to detect possible infections. Hypertensive people can donate if they have been on antihypertensive treatment for at least a month, while diabetic people can donate as long as they are treated with oral medications and do not inject insulin. Those presenting with flu symptoms must wait at least seven days from the onset of symptoms or the end of antibiotic treatment to be able to donate.”
