Urgent blood donation appeal by the ICHH – wochenblatt.es

All blood groups are needed, especially A +, A- and O +

Tenerife – The Canarian Institute for Blood Donation and Haemotherapy, ICHH, has made an urgent appeal to the Canarian population to come to donate blood in the next few days. The stocks are so low that the adequate supply of the hospitals is endangered.

The ICHH reminds that blood donation is a cornerstone of health care, as it is a unique product that cannot be artificially produced, but only obtained through the generous, altruistic and responsible donation of people who are suitable as donors can be. In addition, whether the components of blood are perishable, it is essential to maintain an even number of donations throughout the year.

The Canarian population showed exemplary behavior when they continued to donate blood despite the critical situation at the beginning of the Corona crisis and during the curfew. In fact, more donations were made in 2020 than in 2019.

The representatives of the ICHH recall that the blood bank is run regionally and has two branches, one in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the other in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. All blood drawn on the islands goes to these two blood banks and is distributed to all islands as needed. Consumption is naturally highest on the two main islands because the large hospitals are located there.

In the Canary Islands, 300 blood donations are needed daily to take care of the planned operations and emergencies. This is the only way to meet the needs arising from cancer treatments, leukemia, anemia, transplants, surgery, car accidents and births with complications. All blood groups would be needed, but especially groups A +, A- and O +.

In view of the critical supply situation, the ICHH reminds that donors from the general public can come to the hospitals to donate blood without an appointment. However, it is recommended to visit the website efectodonacion.com, where all information about the Canarian blood donation centers can be found. The places where blood is taken are displayed under the button “¿DÓNDE DONAR?”. A list of locations and dates can also be found at www3.gobiernodecanarias.org/sanidad/ichh/colectasi.asp
