To save her life, a drug is needed which unfortunately is unavailable in Italy. This is the story of a 17 year old girl suffering from one cardiac syndrome very serious, which caused ventricular arrhythmias, syncope, fainting and, during the worst crises, even death. Dr. Oleksandra Kotsiborska, doctor but above all mother of the girl, speaks about the teenager’s condition. Mrs. Kotsiborska, a Ukrainian who has been living in Italy for years and registered with the medical order of Naples, has managed to save her daughter on several occasions.
He will never forget the last crisis of 17enne, which took place last July 22nd. The illness, then the red code rush to the emergency room of the hospital del Mare in Naples, finally a long and desperate resuscitation, which lasted until the young woman’s heart began to beat regularly again.
“I am a strong woman, I never cry, I face life’s difficulties with determination but on July 22nd I thought I couldn’t make it”, Oleksandra tells Ansa. “I saw my daughter lifeless, with her mouth open, with her vital signs absent on a hospital bed, and the tears fell without me even realizing it. I saw the doctors working hard, without giving up, I feared the worst by now, and then she recovered: ‘Mom, I’m alive’, she told me and I hugged her like the first time because that day she was born again.”
With this atrocious experience behind us, the important thing right now is to find a way to ensure that a similar situation never happens again. The 17-year-old suffers from a syndrome called “long QT”. In essence it is an alteration of the heart rhythm, with a lengthening of the interval between the phase in which the contraction of the ventricles starts and the one in which the electrical recharging process reaches its conclusion. If this interval lasts too long, or does not cease at all, death occurs.
Naturally, the 17-year-old is followed by a doctor and is taking therapy, however, as Oleksandra reports, the drug must not have managed to contain the lethal effects caused by the disease. Only the timely intervention of the doctors at the Mare hospital prevented the worst. “The dedication of doctors Calvanese and Izzo was decisive, even with theirs therapeutic plan. But given the rarity of the syndrome, the requested drug must be imported from the United States since in Italy there is a shortage of the molecule of which it is composed”, explains the woman.
To save the 17 year old, therefore, a specific drug is needed. A drug which is not found in Italy, but which would be available in the United States. Hence her mother’s appeal, which she has searched everywhere for in recent years. For the girl’s sake, however, the medicine should arrive directly in Naples. “I work a lot for her and I don’t stop planning her future, because she has a future: she studies at the aesthetic academy but because of the defibrillator she can’t stay in contact with the machinery that generates electromagnetic fields. It will mean that she will become an entrepreneur , I don’t give up”, concludes the woman.
To keep the girl alive, the doctors decided to install a cardiac defibrillator capable of being activated in case of need. The hope, however, is that this story will come to the attention of those responsible, so that the drug can finally become easily available.
