Urgent Alert: Hospitals in Southern Lebanon at Risk Amid Escalation of Fighting – International Red Cross Director

Fabrizio Carbone, Regional Director of the International Committee of the Red Cross in the Middle East, announced that the escalation of fighting on the southern border of Lebanon will exacerbate the suffering of hospitals that are already suffering from a lack of cash in the country that is going through a financial crisis.

Doctors in southern Lebanon sounded the alarm, saying that the influx of infected people had pushed the health sector to do its best.

Carbone stated that Lebanon does not have the necessary resources to support its health facilities, during his conversation with Reuters in front of the Lebanese Marjayoun Hospital near the country’s border with Israel.

“Then you also have a lot of health sector staff who have left the country, so, yes, there are concerns,” Carbone said.

He added, “We know that something must happen, and we hope that the situation will not deteriorate. The situation will call for the need for massive medical support for the people of southern Lebanon and for all those affected by the conflict.”

The director of Marjayoun Hospital said that the hospital has 14 emergency beds and is struggling to continue operating due to a lack of staff and a lack of necessary fuel. The hospital operates with its own electricity generators 20 hours a day and spends $20,000 a month on fuel.

Carbone urged the warring parties on Lebanon’s border with Israel to respect the protection status of medical staff and facilities, saying it was “extremely frightening and extremely disturbing” to see cases in which rescue workers are killed in bombings.
