Urgent Alert: 250 Residents on Islands in Tvedestrand Municipality at Risk of Isolation Due to Extreme Cold

On Saturday evening, Tvedestrand municipality sent out SMS alerts to around 250 residents on islands in the Lyngør area, many of whom risk being isolated indefinitely due to the extreme cold this week.

This is stated in an article by Tvedestrand posten.

The police warn: – It is urgent

Can be frozen

Some of the islands in the municipality risk being isolated, as the sea is about to freeze to ice due to low air and water temperatures recently.

If the sea freezes, scheduled boats will not be able to go between the islands and the mainland, and the local population will thus become weatherproof.

– We are in a cold period right now, in addition to the fact that it is cold in the sea. This means that there is a chance that it will freeze again. Then the boats will not be able to go as normal.

This is what the general manager of Sørlandets Maritime told Dagbladet on Saturday evening. The boat company operates scheduled boat, taxi and charter operations in Tvedestrand municipality.

– It is quite realistic to say that it can happen, because it is extremely cold. In addition, the water temperature drops drastically, he says further.

The temperatures at Lyngør have been down to -28 degrees this weekend, and the water on Saturday evening has a temperature of +1.7 degrees, according to Hansen.

– The people who live on the islands are hardy, and they have been out on a winter’s night before. At the same time, perhaps not everyone thinks that this could happen, so it’s good to be prepared in case the boats don’t go, he adds.

Can be isolated for weeks

Hansen tells Tvedestrandsposten that the islands were isolated for 6-7 days in the winter of 2012.

– What is special this time is that it is even colder. In addition, it is predicted to be cold ahead. The weather can change quickly, but in the worst case scenario we risk the islands being isolated for a couple of weeks, he tells the newspaper.

The only way to get to and from the islands if it’s freezing is via helicopter. Residents on Sandøya have now shoveled a landing pad for a helicopter on the island, in case this becomes a reality in the coming days.

Sørlandets Maritime has notified the municipality, which has again issued a warning to residents on the islands.

– The municipality is now working on measures to preserve life and health, then the fire service will carry out a risk assessment in the event that it starts to burn, or if an immediate rescue with the helicopter is needed, Hansen tells Dagbladet.
