As of today, a mixed working group of Flemish government and parliamentarians will consider the next step in the nitrogen dossier. In the run-up to that meeting, business organizations Voka and twenty Flemish sector organizations are calling on politicians to take immediate action. “Without a robust nitrogen framework, Flanders will literally come to a standstill,” is stated in the entrepreneurs’ ‘ultimate appeal’. “If you do not act now, our companies and, by extension, society as a whole will face a permit freeze and billions of euros in damage.”
In the open letter, the employers point out the uncertainty created by the annulment of the environmental permit for the Ineos ethane cracker and the withdrawal of the ministerial instruction from Flemish Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir. “Everything that requires a shovel to be dug into the ground is in jeopardy,” is the criticism. “In the coming weeks and months, the number of stalled files in all economic sectors will no longer be manageable. Flanders is in danger of becoming bogged down in a nitrogen swamp and falling by the wayside as an international investment location.”
In concrete terms, the Flemish employers are calling for the text of the nitrogen decree to be brought into line with the agreement reached by the Flemish government in March. When substantiating the decree, the critical comments made by the Council of State at the beginning of this month must be taken into account. “Starting to renegotiate a new nitrogen decree from scratch is absolutely not an option. The Flemish companies simply do not have time anymore, we have been running late for a long time.”
