Urgent Action Needed to Save Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos

The popular Navagio beach on the island of Zakynthos in Greece is a popular tourist destination.

Not only because of the idyllic white sand and turquoise sea, but perhaps mostly because of the Panagiotis shipwreck which has been lying there for over 40 years and has given the beach the nickname “Shipwreck Beach”.

Now the risk of the shipwreck disappearing is increasing, and local authorities are sounding the alarm.

Requires grip

Newer photos from the scene show that the condition of the shipwreck is only getting worse and worse due to bad weather, such as high waves washing over the beach and winter storms, writes the Greek online newspaper Greek City Times.

Local authorities fear that if no action is taken, the shipwreck will disappear.

Now Zakynthos’ mayor, Giorgos Stasinopoulos, is urging the Greek Ministry of Tourism to take action to protect the landmark. The local authorities want them to take control of the wreck, which involves maintenance, but also security to ensure that not too many tourists visit the beach at once.

– It is time for the local authorities to take over control of this landmark. The ship is disappearing, and it is the last chance to save what is left, says a statement from Mayor Stasinopoulos.

Was closed

Last summer, Navagio was closed due to the risk of landslides from the steep slopes that surround the beach.

Navagio beach was originally known as Agios Georgios, but through thousands of Instagram photos worldwide has become known as Shipwreck Beach or Navagio. It is located on the northwest coast of the island of Zakynthos in Greece and has been voted several times as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

The beach is only accessible by sea and is a beautiful bay where the ship Panayotis was washed ashore in 1980. The reason was a combination of bad weather and mechanical problems on the ship.

Since then the beach was called Shipwreck (Navagio in Greek) and tourists are taken there by boat to see the wreck and swim in the crystal clear water around the secluded beach.
