Urged to lose, Ukrainian troops blow up bridges to prevent troops from retreating

KIEV – The Ukrainian military uses barrier troops to prevent other units from retreating in battle against Russia.

The barrier force is a disciplinary guard unit made up of hardline nationalists. The claim was made by the Russian military in the midst of the ongoing war.

“On Monday (6/6/2022), Ukrainian barrier troops blew up a road bridge in the city of Svaytogorsk in the northern part of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR),” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov told a news conference, reported by Reuters. RT.com.

The move left Ukrainian military units, namely the remaining battalions of the 95th Airborne Assault Brigade and 81st Separate Airborne Brigade, trapped in the city.

“Disconnected from the main troops and supply lines due to the destruction of the bridge, (the troops) left their military equipment and weapons strewn along the banks of the Seversky Donets river,” Konashenkov said.

Up to 80 Ukrainian soldiers crossed the river by swimming. The Russian army consciously did not fire on those who withdrew from the battle.
