Urbanloop, urban transport of the future, could operate from 2024

Urbanloop, the challenge of engineering students from Ensem in Nancy a little over 3 years ago, becomes in 2021 a large-scale industrial project. Autonomous, electric transport to meet the challenge of the energy transition and using artificial intelligence.

By leaving the site of the Technopôle de Nancy-Brabois which it had occupied until then to settle in Tomblaine, on a site of 4.5 hectares, Urbanloop has taken a further step.
At the start of 2021, we are now far from the challenge of leaving students, engineers at Ensem. The project is entering its industrial phase. The team, which has just hired a new recruit on a permanent contract, is working on homologation files and preparing a world record. Its goal: a first loop in 2024.

In 2024, we hope for a first loop capable of transporting the public somewhere in the world and preferably here in Nancy.

In Tomblaine, their new playground, the first steps were taken a few days ago. The construction of a 1 km track on rails with three stations and three loops should take a few months. A new capsule prototype will be tested there. This time, she has two places. It has also been enhanced for more comfort and accessibility for the elderly or disabled. It was also designed to allow you to take a bicycle or stroller.

We want to revolutionize transport and offer something that does not exist on the market.

A world record for 2021

In May 2021, Urbanloop will attempt a world record… Travel one kilometer in one minute while consuming less than a euro cent in electricity.
To achieve this record, the capsules are under construction thanks to a real collaboration on the scale of the Grand-Est region. The University of Lorraine and the engineering schools of Nancy, but also the INSIC in Saint-Dié, the PSV company in the Vosges or the La croisette garage in Saint-Nicolas-de-Port.

Urbanloop uses our 3D printing equipment to make the mold for the capsule shell, which will then be made in composite materials at PSV.

2021 is a very important year for Urbanloop. They are now six permanent members of SAS Urbanloop. A company in which the University of Lorraine has acquired a stake. It’s rare enough to be stressed.
In addition to the world record in preparation, the company Urbanloop has launched all the necessary homologation applications. Complex cases which must meet point by point all the safety requirements for public transport.
For Jean-Philippe Mangeot, once all these approvals have been obtained, everything could go very quickly. For him, 2024 could be the year for a very first loop carrying users.
