Urban development funding for the Rhine-Main area

Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) – With financial support from the state, three Hessian municipalities can start urban planning competitions for a better design of their region. Mörfelden-Walldorf (Groß-Gerau district), Steinbach (Taunus) and Obertshausen (Offenbach district) have successfully applied as partner municipalities for the future workshop of the state initiative “Großer Frankfurter Bogen”, as the Ministry of Economics announced at the request of the German Press Agency in Wiesbaden . This would allow them to start urban planning competitions for which the state would bear up to 85 percent of the costs.

The “Großer Frankfurter Bogen” residential construction initiative was launched in 2019 to stimulate residential construction in the Rhine-Main area. All municipalities that have a rail connection with a connection that leads to Frankfurt Central Station in a maximum of 30 minutes can belong to the “Großer Frankfurter Bogen”. Economy Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) had identified a potential of 200,000 apartments with rail connections in the Rhine area.

According to the minister’s calculations, more than 50 municipalities, including Frankfurt, fall within the radius specified in the initiative. At the end of 2020, 35 municipalities were part of the initiative, including the major cities of Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Offenbach. You are entitled to special funding for the designation of building areas and the realization of residential construction projects.

“But it’s not just about quantity,” emphasized the Minister for Economic Affairs. “We want livable, socially and ecologically sustainable neighborhoods that will still meet the demands of residents in decades. The future workshop should provide concepts for this.”
